Our Engagement
The Background Story …
About 4 weeks prior to the proposal, I had met with Marie’s parents to ask permission to propose. I remember being so nervous asking this question simply because we had only been dating for about six months at this point … but I blurted the question, “May I ask for your daughter’s hand in marriage?“. We discussed various topics such as where we would live, the finances, and finishing school.
THEY APPROVED!
As soon as I was given permission, I asked them for proposal ideas. Usually I am a little creative but I was at a loss at this point. I didn’t want to screw anything up or be cheezy. Her dad mentioned the Michigan Competitive Band Associate State competitions coming up in a few weeks which her siblings were a part of. It happened to be taking place at Ford Field in Detroit, MI. My first thought was, “there is no way …”. After much more consideration, I/we decided to give it a shot and see what the Ford Field big shots would think about it.
Surprisingly, they were thrilled to help out and it was by far one of the easiest processes ever to set up. They told us what time it could happen, I sent them some dialogue and BOOM! … the proposal was scheduled. Marie’s parents and myself decided not to tell ANYONE about the proposal, not even her grandparents who came along with us.
The day was here.
We arrived at Ford Field at 8am with the engagement ring buried in Marie’s mom’s purse. My parents made a secret “mini vacation” out of the deal in order to see the proposal that morning; Marie had no idea they were there. The proposal took place around noon and it was by far the longest 4 hours I have ever had to wait. Not to mention, there were thousands of people sitting behind us with no clue what was about to take place. The rest is history …
The proposal took place at Ford Field in Detroit, MI on November 5, 2011 at the end of an MCBA competition. The video says it all, ENJOY!
